Casa Adelita was built in the late 18th century, when San Miguel de Allende was still called San Miguel El Grande. This city served later as a setting for the War of Independence of 1810. At that time, Casa Adelita boasted a larger expanse of land, encompassing a charming courtyard with orange trees and gardens. Remarkably, beneath these grounds, tunnels were constructed, serving as a refuge to the churches during times of persecution (one of these tunnels is under the pool). During this time, the name of the owners is unknown. In the 19th century it became the residence of the Zavala family for several generations. Its current owners remodeled the house to bring the systems into the current century while maintaining its colonial charm.
Casa Adelita, like many other colonial residences in San Miguel de Allende, is characterized by a facade adorned with meticulously preserved original details. Due to regulations, it is obliged to adhere to the same style, colors, finishes, and solid construction, which further enhances its historical charm.
The courtyard fountain, like all fountains back in that time, derived its water through clay pipes from the El Chorro spring, which rised above Parque Juarez and distributed throughout the city, especially in the famous lavaderos for those who didn’t have direct access, San Miguel also had about 140 street fountains where people could quench their thirst.
